Saskatoon has just seen the completion of one of its largest road and bridge construction projects to date with the opening of the new Chief Mistawasis Bridge. Officially opened on Oct. 2, 2018, the bridge allows commuters easier access the northern part of the Saskatoon and the Comfort Suites Saskatoon hotel without having to travel through downtown traffic. It also provides a gateway to other areas of town that visitors may want to explore while staying in the Paris of the Prairies.

The Bridging to Tomorrow Project

The Bridging to Tomorrow Project not only included the erection of the brand new Chief Mistawasis Bridge, but the replacement of the city’s oldest bridge, the 111-year-old Traffic Bridge. While the Traffic Bridge was originally built to connect people from the Saskatoon neighbourhood of Nutana to downtown, the Chief Mistawasis Bridge was built to alleviate traffic from the city’s Circle Drive North Bridge and provide an easier way for those travelling between the southeast part of the city’s north end.

A Bridge to the North

The new six-lane Chief Mistawasis Bridge can be easily accessed via the new McOrmond Drive and Central Avenue extensions on the east side of the bridge. The extensions eventually hook up with Marquis Drive on the west side, which leads commuters directly to one of the best Saskatoon hotels, the Comfort Suites.

According to Google Maps, the 12.6-kilometre commute from the southeast end of the city near Highway 5 to the Comfort Suites now only takes approximately 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Saskatoon residents in the southeast side of the city not only benefit from the bridge, but so do travellers coming from southern communities such as Regina, Moose Jaw and Yorkton.

A Closer Connection to the Airport and SaskTel Centre

Those visiting with family and friends in Saskatoon can now take advantage of this new link to the northwest side of the city. Staying at hotels close to Saskatoon Airport (Skyxe) allows those visiting Saskatoon on business or leisure access other parts of the city that much easier. In addition, those wanting to catch a late-night concert will have easier access to hotels near SaskTel Centre.
