If your young chick has recently flown the coop and is studying at the University of Saskatchewan, why not check in on him or her by booking a family suite at one of the best Saskatoon hotels. Bring your family pet for a visit at our Saskatoon pet-friendly hotel while you're at it and let your student enjoy a staycation of sorts by enjoying these 7 fun, educational and practical activities in Saskatoon.

1. Spend a Celestial Evening at the Observatory

Popular among Saskatoon tourism attractions, this University of Saskatchewan landmark is a perfect place for students and their families to learn about the stars and planets while getting a lesson in local history. The observatory is open year-round and is free of charge on Saturday nights, when it offers visitors a look through its three-metre refracting telescope.

2. Center In On Some Science

Located on the U of S campus, on the first floor of the Biology and Geology Buildings is the Museum of Natural Sciences, where you can learn about the Earth’s evolution. Displays include dinosaur replicas, fossils, live animals, plants, rocks and minerals. Admission is free and hours are Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday noon to 10 p.m., with closures on holidays.

3. Learn about the Dawning of Western Civilization

Another great museum for families is the Western Development Museum, located just south of Saskatoon airport hotels and the U of S campus. The largest human history museum in Saskatchewan with a collection of nearly 80,000 artifacts, the WDM provides the story of the province, from settlement to the present. Students receive discounted admission to the museum with a valid student card.

4. Hear the Stories of Saskatchewan’s First People

Based on the homeland of the indigenous people of the Northern Plains above the South Saskatchewan River, Wanuskewin Heritage Park is a National Historic Site located just minutes from our Saskatoon hotel suites. Known for its significant archaeological sites that date back thousands of years, the centre offers revolving exhibitions as well as a dining area that serves traditional First Nations cuisine and a gift shop with locally made handcrafted items. Go for a walk on the interpretive trails, where you can learn about traditional plants/medicines grown in the area.

Available for a limited time, our hotel in Saskatoon Cultural Package provides a family pass to Wanuskewin as well as one night’s accommodation in our two Queen bed suite. Enjoy one of the best Saskatoon hotels with breakfast buffet as well as free Fibre Optic Internet and parking.

5. Tour the Canadian Light Source

A national research facility, the CLS is one of the largest science projects in Canada’s history. It features one of the brightest light sources in Canada, said to be millions of times brighter than the sun, which has been used by thousands of scientists from around the world in ground-breaking health, environmental, materials and agricultural research. The CSL offers free public tours for groups and individuals Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 2 p.m. A booking must be made ahead of time.
